Preserving, exploring, and sharing Portuguese Canadian history

New records donation from Felipe Gomes

We have received a donation from Felipe Gomes, the producer of the documentary Strong Hearts, Steady Hands (2004), directed by Carol Coffey. Gomes ‘ donation includes over 50 hours of filmed interviews with Portuguese immigrants and descendants across Canada and in Portugal. Felipe Gomes was born in Portugal in 1960. In 1987, he immigrated from Lisbon and settled in in London, Ontario, where later opened the Aroma Mediterranean restaurant and café, and a wine import business.

The PCHP is grateful to Felipe Gomes for this donation.

Approximately 47% of this footage has been digitized and is available through York University’s Digital Library. Some interviews are also available on the website Movimento Perpétuo: The Portuguese Diaspora in Canada.

  1. My Father, Joao Martins, is interviewed in the documentary’Strong Heart, Steady Hands’ as he was one of the original Portuguese Pioneers who came to Canada in 1953. I was hoping you could tell me where I could receive a digital copy of the documentary to show his Grandchildren.
Any help you could provide in locating a copy in English would be appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Luisa Martins
